Dinner at Grande's

This represents not so much an artistic victory as a victory over technology. After struggling with scanning software for two hours, I've figured a couple of things out.

My daughters and their drinks.

We were sitting inside a Starbucks one Saturday afternoon, and my kids were drinking their hyper-caffeinated drinks and eating muffins. I started sketching them on the back of the paper bag the muffin came in. I liked it well enough to reproduce it when I got home. Took some liberties with the background and gave it a watercolor wash.

A few tentative steps

A few years ago I was having a conversation with my brother about where to put my creative energy. Did I want to keep writing short stories - a demanding art - or did I want to play. By that I meant spend time working on drawings and filling my sketchbook. He answered, "Both!" without reservation. As if I didn't, say, already have a job. As if I didn't already have two kids. As if I had all the time in the world.

I've been trying to choose ever since, but the choice refuses to be made. I will always want to write. I will always want to draw. Sometimes the drawing will take me away from the writing. Sometimes the writing will take me away from my sketchbook.

Here, I hope, I can find a place to bring the two together.

We'll see, won't we?
